While everyone is busy talking about healthcare reform, Melania Trump is out visiting patients around the nation!
The First Lady made another stop on her hospital tour to see sick youngsters at the Children’s National Medical Center where she participated in the grand opening of a “Healing Garden.”
Melania surprised a group of kids at the dedication ceremony for the Bunny Mellon Healing Garden, a 7,200-square-foot rooftop garden at D.C’s only pediatric care hospital. The garden was built with multiple donations including $2.1 million provided by the CoStar Group. In 2013, all living First Ladies came together to serve as honorary chairs for the project. It was named after Bunny Mellon, a philanthropist who helped Jackie Kennedy design the White House Rose Garden.
“This garden will be a quiet space for children to benefit from nature’s most important elements: fresh air and beautiful views, to relax and enjoy in peace. It has always been my belief that a nurturing and positive environment is vital to the health and well-being of all children,” Melania said to a smiling audience.
Plans for the garden began nearly four years ago when a young patient asked to go outside. Unfortunately, the simple wish was actually quite difficult to grant given the lack of space and medical resources outside the hospital. Now, every patient has access to the safe and accessible garden that is fully equipped with outlets that provide power to medical equipment.
“It took so many kind and caring people focused on these very brave and amazing children,” Melania said while thanking the many people who helped create one patient's wish come true.
Some think Melania is still getting used to her new role, but the entire country can agree that she’s bringing a new and special voice to the Office of the First Lady. The Washington Post, who typically attacks her husband, described Melania as warm, playful, and inquisitive while bonding with patients during a coloring activity.
